about
These lyrics were written by the Irish poet Thomas Moore (1779-1852), and tell the story of heroic Malachi, the 10th century King of Ireland, who successively defeated two Viking champions in hand-to-hand combat. His trophies were a sword from one and a collar of gold from the other. The Red-Branch Knights were a hereditary order of the chivalry in Ulster.
lyrics
Let Erin remember the days of old
Ere her faithless sons betray’d her
When Malachi wore the collar of gold
Which he won from her proud invader
When the kings with standards of green unfurl’d
Led the Red-Branch Knights to danger
Ere the emerald gem of the western world
Was set in the crown of a stranger
O let Erin remember the days of old
Ere her faithless betray’d her
Wearing the collar of gold
O let Erin remember the days of old
Ere her faithless sons betray’d her
Wearing the collar of gold
On Lough Neagh’s bank where the fisherman strays
Where the clear cold eve’s declining
He sees the round towers of the other days
In the wave beneath him shining
Thus shall memory often in dreams sublime
Catch a glimpse of the days that are over
Thus sighing look through the waves of time
For the long-faded glories they cover
